Hello Kyrist and thank you for answering our questions.
At what age did you find your love for Drum&Bass?
I think it was around 13/14, bought my first jungle CD after hearing older friends mix it. My mates in school thought I was weird, because I wasn’t interested in what they were listening to! When I bought my first pair of decks at 16, that’s when it really kicked in though.
You are a young female producer in a mainly male dominated industry, do you ever think that there is pressure to represent female artists?
I don’t feel like there’s much pressure on myself as such, I just do what comes naturally and don’t force myself. I write music that comes from my heart and mind, and if people like it then that’s awesome! There aren’t many of us girl DnB producers (that I’m aware of!) so as a whole, maybe we do have something more to prove, that we are capable and can be just as talented. But overall, I think we’re all (male & female) doing it for the same reasons, because we have a strong passion for the music, and want to be heard. I’m just glad to be part of a scene and culture that I have admired for so many years.
Your music production is deep and rolling. Do you use your personal emotions into your production?
Yes of course, all the time! I think it’s important to put feeling into what you write, although sometimes it may not be perceived as what you intended, having an outlet such as music is a brilliant platform to express what you’re really feeling!
Have you ever recorded your own vocals to be used in your music?
I have once, but that was for a uni project! I’ve been thinking about it for a while actually, and although I can’t sing that well, I’d definitely give it a shot in the future. But for the time being, I’d rather work with vocalists who can sing ;)
Any forthcoming events and/or releases?
Events wise, you can catch me at Plan B, Brixton in the basement this Friday (10th October) for the Nurtured Beatz x In-Reach party, and at Rhythm Factory, Whitechapel, next Friday (17th October) for Heavy Signal.. Not many releases planned for the rest of this year, but I’ve been in talks with the guys from Vandal Records, and hopefully next year I’ll release something with them. Maybe more on Proximity too, who knows!
What will you bring to Drum&Bass in 2015?
I hope some fresh ideas, a few collabs, and bigger and better things! I’ll be moving house too at some point early on next year, so hopefully a change of surroundings in a new environment will help me develop and expand musically!
Thank you Kyrist and see you on Friday at Plan B!
