Drum+Basics

Mixes, events and interviews – we share what we love #DNB

Exclusive Interview: Paul SG

Paul SG has just kicked off his mini UK tour here in the U.K.
Drum+Basics asked Paul SG a few Qs.

We know you have been in to different genres of music from an early age but when & why did you finally decide to start producing Drum and Bass?

I decided to start writing Drum and Bass after i went to a couple of events in the early 2000s. first picked up with djing before i eventually tried to write my first few tracks around 2004/2005.
the energy of this music got me hooked immediately. Most of my friends were listening to Drum and Bass & Jungle and they infected me with the virus.
to try and bring my own ideas and inspirations in was a logical progression.

Jazzsticks is the label you run.
Why did you start a record label?

I never sat down and thought about starting a label to be honest. A distributor got in touch with me and asked if i would be interested in doing a label. After talking with a couple of people, i decided to give it a try.
They wanted only my own music to be released preferably which was great and also handy as i wrote too much music back then.
To be honest, the whole label idea makes a lot more sense to me today, i know what i want to achieve and it mainly became a home for my friends & collective. We are doing well and got many exciting projects in the pipeline!

Is there any forthcoming material on Jazzsticks?

Yes for sure. Our latest release was my own EP called โ€žGone Too Farโ€œ and it was the first ever EP i released as an artist. the next release will be a remix EP with basically the main guys on my label remixing each other.
We are obviously already looking into 2015ยดs releaseplan which will see the highly anticipated debut album of โ€žThe Jazzassinsโ€œ called โ€žThe Chaletโ€œ as well as solo artist albums by Decon & myself.
This is just the first few things to be happening early next year. Besides, we have the usual singles lined up as well as Flowrianยดs long awaited EP plus our latest addition Soulstructure with their first release on Jazzsticks.

Your Djing at an event this Wednesday in London alongside some other great producers.
What do you think about a midweek drum and bass night?

I think midweek nights are important for the full picture of a scene. ConSequence is an amazing concept and idea and i am very much looking forward to play alongside some great people next week.
If i would be based in london, iยดd obviously check this night out more often and so should you if you get a chance! Massive props to Conrad & Kris for believing in this idea and putting so much love & time into it.

Have you attended any drum and bass events this year when not Djing?

I went to Sun and Bass with my girlfriend this summer and although i played one evening, i listened to a lot of sets during the week.

As we are approaching the final month of 2014
What has been your favourite drum and bass release this year?

I guess Pulsaarยดs โ€žLove Letters EPโ€œ on our label was my favourite release this year. i am mostly listening and playing our own stuff and everything else is mostly unreleased so i donยดt really know if that came out already.

Any more forthcoming events you are Djing at?

I started uk-mini tour last friday at Liquid V in the basement of Plan B in London. Doing the wicked midweek thing at ConSequence in London next week and will head up north for the last show in Redditch.
Will play the, already, traditional christmas gig in germany with my friends from Balance in Wuerzburg before an amazing year comes to an end.

Many Thanks Paul SG.
