Inperspective Records all began back in 1997.
Gaining huge respect within D&B.
This record label has had some groundbreaking releases from many artists.
Breakage, Fracture & Andy Skopes.
The list goes on.
Chris Inperspective founded an event which represents the unrepresented in D&B back in 1999.
” TECHNICALITY “
There’s alot of musical history behind this man, let’s find out more.
1997 seems a long time ago now.
It is a long time ago!
Iโm getting on now but the knees are still good, once they’ve gone itโs over!
What were the main reasons behind launching the record label?
To be honest it was only one, frustration. At one time, back in the old days (cue flashback sound) around 94/95, there was a massive change in the scene in my opinion.
There was music being made and not being played and I couldnโt understand why. I didnโt want to always hear straight beats.
I decided I wanted to start the label after meeting Equinox around that time when I was going to Lazerdrome in Peckham (gentrified flats there now grr lol)
Anyway, I remember having a conversation with him about starting the label and I was rambling on about something, then I stated โas long as we keep things in perspective itโll be coolโ He said โthatโll be a good name for a labelโ and thatโs where it comes from.. stupid really.
From that point it was just about learning how to do things. learning about vinyl manufacture, learning about mastering, distribution and all the other aspects that make a label run. I couldnโt do anything else.
Do you think you chose the correct career?
In regards to my happiness and wellbeing, 100%. In regards to my wallet, noooooo.
This is something you do for love, you canโt expect to make millions. However, I do believe itโs possible to make a living if youโre smart, or if you get smart people around you.
This is why I have more help than ever now. Thereโs Jean and Ben who help me run aspects of the labels and my partner Helen has become a fundamental part of the organisation as it is. Simon (SvS Design) continues to do amazing design work and is helping develop the look of the label in a forward thinking and modern way.
I do my monthly radioshow on Hoxton FM with one my good mates Alex Jones aka Weights & Changes. I share a studio with Senses, a long time friend and artist on the label and Technicality DJ, last but never least thereโs Artjom has become our European Liaison of sorts, helping organise and promote several events in the last year in Latvia, Lithuania and going forward Greece.
Very excited about the future.
Inpersepctive Records is profoundly known for its groundbreaking vinyl releases.
Thank you. Iโm proud of every tune Iโve released.
Do you think you can continue pressing vinyl this year?
100% Yes!
Having recently done the South London Record Fair I am very happy with the state of the vinyl scene.
There is a worldwide backup of vinyl manufacture, well in certain formats at least and that says it all really.
I think people will always connect with the tangibility of vinyl.
Seeing some of the younger guys like Beautiflly crafted crew so in to their vinyl and doing vinyl only nights makes me feel that the black cracks future is in safe hands. Shout to the Rye Wax crew too for helping to keep things strong.
You’ve been known to host shows on Jungletrain.net.
Are you still hosting regular radio shows?
It was unfortunately getting harder and harder to do the jungletrain show from my home every month.Thatโs the only reason i had to stop and Iโm still gutted about that.
I hope to do some guest shows on there in the future if theyโll still have me.Love to Arnie and and JT family always.
That show helped make people understand the music I truly enjoy and show that Inperspective isnโt just about amen, regardless of how much we love it.
I just do the Hoxton FM show now I head to the studio and do the show with Alex of the 4th Tues of every month. We play a wide selection of music and itโs slowly getting very popular as we chat and have banter.
Itโs great fun! Long may it continue.
I do also step in for DJ Prospect with Voice Mc from time to time on Origin FM too.. Love it there!
Archives are all up on the Inperspective Soundcloud.
Was it your decision to host Technicality events?
That was just a natural progression from the label really.
The label represented the underrepresented so it made sense that we would try and host an event in the same vein. Bailey, Blame and Paradox gave us so much support in the early days and it made it so easy to get artists to come and play sets of music they felt they couldnโt play anywhere else.
Itโs something that remains today, however Iโm pleased to say that things now are so much more open and diverse than it was 15 odd years ago.
Over that time, there has, i think an ethos has developed that could be described as the โTechnicality Soundโ. So I think now the artists are listening to the archives and finding new ways of representing that sound.
Itโs so amazing to me when I meet people out who tell me they spent their formative years coming to Technicality events or listening to the archives online from abroad.
Makes it all worthwhile!
What makes your event different compared to other London D&B events?
Hereโs the thing, I genuinely believe that outside of the big commercial clubs, all of the small to medium events in London have something unique to offer, thatโs what so great about it.
I love that you have so many D&B events that cater up to 400 or more that play quality, non commercial, breakbeat electronica.
So in answer to your question, I can only say itโs the people involved with making technicality happen that make it different to other eventsโฆ…well that and we play bare mashup experimental beats mixed with quality rollers and anything inbetween lol!!
Anymore events to happen over the forthcoming months?
Iโm pleased to say I have a few with some more in the worksโฆ
20th June –ย Technicality @ Silver Bullet
17th July – Rupture @ Secret Location (London)
1st August – Laba Daba Festival (Ratnieki, Latvia)
15th August – Beatz @ Bar a Bar (London)
I also co-host the Inperspective show, monthly on Hoxton FM. 4th Tuesday of the Month
Final words?
Just a big thanks and shout to all representing the underground. Respects to the Clashmouth crew!
Many Thanks.
