With releases Xenon & Lithium on Scientia Music over the last few years,ย Skulpture is still aiming to produce quality dark rhythms.
His passionate production sure lets his listeners lose themselves and gain a strong connection with his music.ย Drum+Basics wanted to know more!
Hey Skulpture, great to be interviewing you.ย You are based in Oxford.ย Does Oxford have a lot of Drum and Bass on offer?
There is a healthy scene in Oxford representing the full spectrum. Terraforms, Hyurr Sounds, Pulse as well as free party rigs Unhinged, Contagious and Koalition are all repping drum n bass on a regular basis. There is also the Ultra Culture Radio show with Rob C and Rich Raw of Wyatt Noise recordings.
While being a producer you are also a Father.ย How do you juggle the two?
Its pretty crazy to be honest! I basically have to make sacrifices – donโt see friends as much as I would like, very little downtime, donโt watch tv, play console games etc.. I also have a very understanding wife!
What gave you the incentive to produce music?
I have always been inspired to make music since an early age through my dads records and I have a long history now in other guises. When I was younger though it was all I could do to afford my first set of 1210s and studio kit felt rather inaccessible – that all changed of course when computers got more powerful.
Your production is meaningly deep.ย Have you ever sat in your studio and started a tune completely the opposite style?
Ha ha, I am a naturally reflective/analytical person and think that gets (reflected) in my music. I love that bitter/sweet/organic/futuristic contrast in DnB and there is a sweet spot I aim to hit upon. I could never go down the cheddar cheese or clownish route, it just doesnโt move me at all – I have to make music that I emotionally connect with and prefer to challenge myself within that realm.
What is your personal favourite track off the Lithium EP?
Touching the Void has had the most lasting appeal for me, though Recovery gets played the most as it does most damage on the dance floor.
Is there any new material we need to listen out for?
Yes, a couple of collabs with DROPS & JScience on Scientia. There will a be a two tracker coming on Automate Tech including a remix. I I have also been in the studio with Kolectiv and also Qbig & Zenith. I lost momentum last year due to building a studio in my back garden – had to be done due to noise complaints ! What I thought would take a few weeks turned into several months! I have a load of great music on the go, so watch this space.
Where and what do you see yourself doing in 10 years time?
I want to continue to challenge myself and evolve my sound and would genuinely love to have built up a history of working with some of the labels and artists I respect the most in the scene.
Here’s a exclusive guest mix!
Many thanks Skulpture.
