Drum+Basics

Mixes, events and interviews – we share what we love #DNB

Exclusive interview: Nausika

Nausika came in to my world with their BMT release ‘Dominion/Echoes’ which blew my mind and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. I read up on these guys a little and was quite surprised that they haven’t been producing music together for that long, but still manage to get that special ‘Nausika’ sound. They are also playing at Wire in Leeds this Friday for Central Beatz.dnb

Hello Nausika and thank your answering our questions.
So, who are you guys?

Weโ€™re Aron & Ryan, two drum and bass producers from Manchester & Leicester, living in Leeds.

I know you guys met through University which is how you ended up producing together. Was it clear from the beginning what type of music you would produce together? Was the aim to produce music for the masses or did it just start as a project at first?

Yeah well wet met through talking about drum and bass in one of the first lessons we had, and showing each other the tunes we were making on our own so it was a fairly natural process really. We just started making tunes that we liked and eventually when we though they were at level good enough for potential release, we sent some demos out. Thankfully weโ€™ve received great support and weโ€™ve just continued on as such.

How would you describe your music?

As producers we are both drawn to a more stripped back, dark and atmospheric sound, so that has a big influence on what we create.

Your release on BMT music ‘Dominion/Echoes’ is fucking amazing! What can you tell us about these tracks?

Thanks very much, โ€˜Dominionโ€™ was one of this first tracks we finished a couple of months after starting producing together. We made it together at Aronโ€™s mums house one afternoon passing a set of headphones back and forth so it was fairly laid back process thatโ€™s finally turned into something weโ€™re really proud of.

You are playing in Leeds on the 10 July for Central Beatz, where else can we catch you play this year?

Yeah itโ€™s a event to raise money for the disaster in Nepal, with all proceedings being donated to charities aiding in the recovery, itโ€™s a really great idea and weโ€™re really pleased to be involved. Other than that the event schedule is free at the moment.

Do you prefer to produce, rave or to DJ?

In terms of a favourite, itโ€™s hard to pick as you need a good combination of the three to continue moving forward. Clearly plenty of time needs to be spent honing your skills, but lots of inspiration can be gained from experiencing and performing what youโ€™re creating in a live setting, and seeing what works and creating new ideas.

I’m sure you get this question all the time but where does the name Nausika come from?

Itโ€™s the name of a character from a book I read when I was younger. Thought it had a cool ring to it and suited the style of music we were making.

What’s next for you?

We have a lot of new music that weโ€™re in the process of finishing up so we look forward to getting this out there. We also have more additions to our mix series coming soon too.
– Expect to hear a whole different side to our sound very soon.

Thanks!
