Drum+Basics

Mixes, events and interviews – we share what we love #DNB

Behind the Event: Carbon

With quality line ups and always a good crowd, Carbon has become a night you know you’ll have a good time at. On Friday they’re taking over Volks in Brighton again with djs like Klute, Digital, Storm, Flava, Handy and some more and who can say no to that?! This is not a night to be missed!
Since we love to know a little bit more about the people behind the events in contrast to only interviewing DJs and producers, it was about time to get to know more about Carbon. I send some questions over to original crew member Voytek to get us prepared for Friday, and this is what he had to say…

Hello Voytek and thank you for answering my questions!

How did you end up in the wonderful world of London and drum&bass?

Well I grew up in London and got into the music when I was about 15 or so. I started listening then quickly became obsessed and it was just a natural progression to DJing, production and putting on nights.

Do you DJ/produce as well?

DJing was and still is probably what I love doing most. I love making tunes as well and have had a few releases but I feel that my production has suffered because of the amount of time I have put into events but I am now addressing that issue!

You’ve been involved with Carbon for a very long time now, how did it all start?

We began running Carbon as a monthly club event in April 2004 so that is just over 12 years ago now. That all started when there were 3 of us on the same Music Production course in Northbrook College. With one of their mates that made 4 and we were all pretty much into the same stuff. What we wanted to go out to wasn’t really being done and people we wanted to see weren’t being booked so we decided to do it ourselves.

Have you been involved with other events than Carbon?

As well as Carbon the same crew also did a weekly night called Fuse for a while in Brighton which was fun but became hard to sustain for obvious reasons on top of Carbon which we ran monthly for about 4 years. Apart from that I do an oldskool event called Originate with my good friend Kosine and a mixed genre event called Sine Language with a couple more things coming up.carbon 3

What’s been the toughest part of organising raves?

The toughest part I would say is staying positive when you have a bad night and if you are doing a night regularly over a long period of time, this is going to happen. Also even just thinking about an event can keep you up at night. That and flyering in the cold!

Why do you do it?

I do it because it’s fun and I like to put on a good party. When it goes well its a really good feeling and I get to put on interesting lineups that aren’t necessarily being done elsewhere, as well as supporting artists that I rate and deserve an audience.

Carbon vs Function next Friday – what a fucking line up!!! How did you end up doing a night with Function Records?

Haha yes looking forward to it! Well Digital is probably my favourite producer and we have booked him a lot of times over the years for Carbon so when he said he wanted to do a party with us for his album launch it was a no brainer!

How did you guys come up with that line up?dnb

Just speaking to Digital we looked at some of the collabs he had on the LP and who else would bring the vibe on the night.

For people who’ve never been to a Carbon night, what can they expect?

A crowd that knows their music, rolling beats and a wicked atmosphere!

What are you looking forward to on the night?

Digital dropping Waterhouse Dub and the rail replacement bus journey home.

What’s next for Carbon and for Voytek?

Whats’s next for Carbon after the Function night is an event at Rye Wax in Peckham with Paradox, Stretch and Dead Man’s Chest. Really looking forward to that. Also doing a UVB-76 night (Ruffhouse and Gremlinz new label) with the Abstractions crew from Bristol in July, an event with Cheeky Monday in Amsterdam and hosting a stage at Shibui Festival in August.

What’s next from me is getting my head down and putting out some more music.

Any famous last words?
