Exclusive Interview: Demand Records

Unknown

Demand Records is a Drum & Bass label founded in Zurich.

The two main people behind this are Andreas M. and Carlos L.

Both are big music fans and promoters since 2009.

They both have the passion, time and pure love for Drum & Bass.

They have built this record label to put out the fresh real music which they’ve said is in high demand.

The label is continuing to do this & has recently released a new series called “Selects” 1 of 2 new series which features various producers.

Previous releases on the label have been Eastcolors, Roygreen & Protone, Phase, BTK, Jaydrop, Bredren plus many more.

Hereโ€™s a quick Q & A with Carlos from Demand Records.

Hey Carlos great to speaking to you again and thanks again for a fantastic time and great hospitality in Zurich for Mute.ch

My pleasure Mary-Anne, it was great meeting you lot!ย

Since 2009 the label has been reaching many milestones with releases.
Do you think youโ€™ve reached a point where you can be happy with what you guys have done with the label ?

Yes we’re happy in various aspects with what we’ve done so far with the label. We feel with some releases we’ve brought something new / interesting to the Drum & Bass table.

As well we’ve tried to be honest and very supportive to our artists and try to get the best of each release. They’re not always getting the recognition we’d like them to have but music is such a subjective thing, it’s hard to be successful with every release.

mutemuteDemand is not just what you do, please tell the readers about MUTE in Zurich.

MUTE is a party brand that was launched in 1999. I was 13 at that time and only got in touch with Drum & Bass around 2006-2007.

MUTE has had different brands, like MUTE.CH (which was a Drum & Bass Party label) or Magnet which concentrated on House Music. They’ve predominantely been running parties at a club called “Hive Club” probably the most well known club in Zurich. As with people getting older, priorities shift.

A lot of the former members quit so at some point I was asked to join MUTE and help out, that was around 2011-2012 but only two years later we had to call it quits, even though the brand was very successful, simply because thereย wasn’tย enough people.Fortunately this changed and MUTE was resurrected in 2015.

For me personally it’s huge honour to represent a brand like MUTE with such a rich history. I got to give a lot of credit to Chris, Phil and all those that helped shape MUTE.

I salute you guys for the hardwork and commitment for Drum & Bass and hope we’re able to keep the spirit you forged alive.

You say that Demand releases are not the so obvious, can you elaborate on this please?

Well we’re not trying to copy any other labels. We do release dancefloor Drum & Bass but not the “obvious” stuff. With obvious I mean we’re not going to ride the wave of what is currently a trend.

We just do what we feel is inspiring, new & interesting. We’re commited to search and find that stuff.

12717479_974979645901880_1333032677939932637_nWhatโ€™s the idea behind the new SELECT Series?

We started Selects so people could better indentify with our releases as well we wanted to refresh Demand with a new Series after 5 years of existence.
“Selects” is not a distinguished style rather a selection of what we think is the very best of each artists music that we receive / find.

It will have feature solo releases as well as various artists releases.

Will these be continuing throughout the year?

Yes definitely, Selects is a platform for us to release music quickly with almost no risk, which is great. We’ve got another V/A coming soon and then two Solo EPs we can’t wait to put out.

Also we are already planning release 5. It’s great music in our opinion by people who deserve more recognition.

There’s so much potential and talent out there we’d like to push these people and help them getting them to the next stage.

Talking of releases what else can we be hearing from the label late 2016?

We got another Series called “Requisites” coming upย which is our thought after vinyl baby. It’s a 6 part series and will have a complete theme, vinyl collectors will hopefully connect to.

We put alot of thought and love into it. It’s hard to sell enough copies in nowadays climate so it’s once again a risky endeavour for us but we felt some tracks just need a physical release and wanted to do something special with it.

So not only the music is amazing the design will be hand drawn. We got the 2 first releases ready and we can’t wait to put it out there.

Any final words?

Thanks for taking the time to let us be heard. Massive big up’s to all our friends, artists and supporters.

Let’s keep on enjoying Drum & Bass!ย

Many Thanks Carlos.
