Questions & Answers with Pennygiles

Stuart Maccallum, aka Pennygiles introduced himself to Drum & Bass listeners back in 2011 with his big tune ‘Au Revoir Blackbird’ which was released on Fizzy Beats in 2012. Since then he has released tunes on labels such as Innerground, V Recordings, C.I.A and I.M LTD, and collaborated with producers like RoyGreen & Protone, Phil Tangent, Spirant, and Mr Joseph.

Drum + Basics had a little chat with the producer…

You’ve recently moved back to Newtown, a little town in Mid Wales… How’s Newtown treating you?

– Yep, back to the sleepy lifestyle. It’s been good and bad! Good for the fact that i’ve got a lot of time to myself to get things working. Bad because of the lack of communication here I tend to spend a lot of the time doing unproductive things.. haha.

So is this your main station for production?

– Pretty much, I’ve got my studio partially set up at my home now, but i’m going to look for a more permanent place for it outside the house soon. It’s too easy to get distracted when the kitchen is in the next room and the xbox is sitting there…

I’ve noticed that you switched genres and that you haven’t produced Drum & Bass for a while. Did switching genres from House to Drum & Bass have any effect on your production?

– Im still an avid fan of house but i just found more enjoyment in drum & bass. I think the fact that I still listen to both genres can sometimes be good to refresh your head of listening to so many similar sounds used in one genre.

What made you change genres, and do you still produce house?

– I didn’t. I still have just as much love for both. Yep, under another alias from time to time.

You have a lot of support from well known Drum & Bass producers and record labels. Do you think you’re under any pressure to produce tunes frequently and of a high standard?

– I don’t think im under so much pressure from labels as much as the pressure i put on myself. I’m trying to constantly step up for people to enjoy. Hopefully i’ll never stay to one sound and saturate it. Im always for pushing new boundaries but keeping that unconscious link to past influences.

Recently your production has been released on heavyweight DnB labels. Any more forthcoming big releases?

– Sure, i’ve got a bit forthcoming on IM:Ltd, a 12 with Demand and a single for their compilation. Then I have a 12 on the flipside to Total Science on C.I.A. with a good friend; Ed:it. Then hopefully some other things which will be set in stone for Christmas…

Any last words?

– Many many thanks for having me for the interview! Big ups everyone who’s been part of this year, past & present. So many people to thank hopefully they know who they are, plus everyone who’s supporting me and enjoying the music! It’s so appreciated – seriously.
