Behind the event: Launch

Big night ahead for the Launch collective on Saturday with a brilliant line up including names like Fierce, A Sides, Skyz, Agman Gora, K-Eye and more. Drum+Basics wanted to know a bit more about the people behind this event so here’s what Jan Lilly had to say…

Hello Jan and thank you for answering our questions!

Can you tell us a little bit more about Launch and how it started?

Launch was started back in 2007 by Handy, MAFS and Kred as they felt there was a gap in the scene for an intimate dnb club night. It’s also very difficult to get booked for a dj set if you’re not producing your own music, so starting Launch enabled us to play out which then led to more bookings. Handy approached myself and my husband Lex TC at the end of 2012 to join the collective as we had some experience of putting on parties and we also had the same view on what makes a great night out. Since then the night has gone from strength to strength building a very loyal following. In the past 2 years we have managed 3 international events and 6 club nights including this one in November.

What makes you book a certain DJ or MC?

Its all about their style and selection, they have to play the best in rolling dnb to keep the crowd dancing all night!! Its not always about playing their most recent selection of dubs, we like a good selection of old and new. Our MCs must be able to let the music breathe.

Some names on the flyer we haven’t seen before, what can you tell us about the line up?

We are pleased to announce Fierce as our new launch resident, A Sides is in the UK from his constant touring of the USA and Australia. He not only spearheaded the We Gotcha albums raising money for Mc Fats, but he is also working on a forthcoming album with Mokoto and we are extremely excited about having him come and play for us. We also like to showcase other Djs that we feel bring the skills and selection that our regulars are used to. We have Skyz playing for us, he has a great following on Rude fm and he has played for us previously in Spain and Marrakesh. Ascension who won the sun n bass mix competition last year played for us in Spain, he always plays a great selection along with seamless mixing.

Looks like it’s going to be a great night so what can we expect?

A night of rolling dnb old and new, an excellent sound system and of course what really makes launch is… Our regulars, they really are what makes it such a good night!

What’s the best part of being a promoter and what’s the hardest?

The best part is seeing the smiling faces of people, dancing and enjoying the music. The downside is finding the right venue and dealing with artist’s agents.

Any big plans for 2015?

We will be hosting some London events as this is our home. We are in talks with a festival promoter in Scotland to host a stage. We have already sold out on our next international event, 3 days in the south of France. This is following the success of our previous international events, a 3 day festival in Marrakech last year which inspired us to buy our own sound system and put on a 3 day Launch party in spain earlier this year. We have our own sound, lights and equipment so we can end up anywhere, that’s one of the best things about the Launch Collective, we have a crowd that follows us everywhere, and we give them the best nights out!

You’ve won a million pounds that can only be spent on hosting a night – how would you spend it?

Thats easy, for us small and intimate is best, we would hire a private island and take all our favorite djs and all our regulars for a night to remember!

Thank you and see you on Saturday!
