Vykhod Sily – The New Order

An insight to Vykhod Sily

No automatic alt text available.

Vykhod Sily is a brand you should be familiar with If you are into your beats more abstract, dark and meticulous. Launching in 2013 Rustee has been delivering specially crafted podcasts taking you on excursions through 85/170bpm electronica music and has a whole series of guests from established DJs all the way through to exciting underground live acts.

Fast forward to 2018 and with careful plotting VS has now released their 2nd project as they now have made it an imprint, bringing you the same ethos as the brand, solid top quality 170 from the likes of dreadmaul, Akinsa & Ghoulcut to name a few. We had a quick catch up with Rostislav (Rustee) the curator and mastermind behind everything.

DBS: Good afternoon and big thank you for your time today Rostislav, so let’s take it all the way back to 2013 with a generic ‘’how did the podcast start’’ question…?

VS: Ez. Huge thanks for having me on this interview. Let’s go back even a bit further in time. Just before the VS podcast started itself I had had a little mix series encompassing 85BPM dubby/tribal sounds called “Rusty Dub”. It was 5 mixes in there back in 2012 featuring the vibes of The Untouchables, Morphy, Thing and many others. So this very mix series shaped the future VS podcast concept as I was keen on dark and deep sounds in that vein. After closing the “Rusty Dub” I was still full of intention to keep on exploring those vibes and was also thinking of doing a podcast on a regular basis. Everything happened pretty quickly. I got a radio slot offering from my old friend and having already a podcast name in mind I launched Vykhod Sily on djstation.ru being aired weekly on Thursdays. In the very beginning, the podcast was strictly halftime dnb but the boundaries got pushed very soon.

DBS: What is your musical history/background, I know you have got a strong passion for funk and soul do you think if you weren’t doing 170 you would be going down those routes? Also, how has the Russian scene grown in regards to electronic music since you started?

VS: Have been a dnb head actually since 1997, following Metalheadz, GLO, Moving Shadow labels. So I’m calling them a “formative influence” to me as a listener. In connection to funk & soul music the more I was listening to dnb stuff in 90’s the more interested I got in samples and the sources for them. So back in 2005, I started buying 45’s records and playing out in my city. Actually, I still keep going 2 ways now, one is drum-n-bass in the shape of a blog and a podcast/label and the other is my soul/funk alter ego where I’m spinning vinyl on a regular basis in Yekaterinburg. Talking about the Russian scene evolving since 2013, yeah the movement has been grown significantly with all the new guys producing appeared on the scene. We have Torn being released on Horo, Dailiv, Hidden Tactics, Code 906, Protagonist, and my others as far as the new names are concerned. Those guys are getting recognized in the deep drum-n-bass circuits outside Russia and this is a wicked thing.

DBS: Now onto the label, I feel when someone builds a brand up it’s the natural progression to then move onto an imprint or events, how was the transition for you and what are your goals?

VS: I was often asked why we didn’t start a label. The time wasn’t right for that a few years back maybe. In 2017 we (with my fellow mate Virulent Green) launched a crowd-sourcing campaign on Patreon with the main aim to build up a community and to set up a label being supported by the people who have been following us. It worked quite well. Up to now, we have 2 releases which came into existence with the assistance of our Patreon heads. All the releases are given away for free. Download them in 320 from patreon.com/vykhodsily_podcast/releases.

DBS: Could you tell us anything about future releases?

VS: Yeah, we have the following roster for the next 6 releases:
VS003 – Ahmad & Akinsa
VS004 – Dailiv & Cryptographic
VS005 – DYL & Spiraal Aurel
VS006 – Entire & Istota
As you might notice all the releases will be the result of a collab work. We started with that concept and we will follow that way, connecting guys together and giving them new spaces to create.

DBS: Time for a quick top 5 now….producers you’re feeling?

VS: Andy Skopes, Dissident, Dubmonger, Owl, Blocks & Escher

DBS: Any Last Words?

VS: Big shout to the worldwide VS family, to the people who have been sticking with us for these 5 years (subscribers, DJ’s, bloggers). Maximum respect to all the artists bringing the new sounds and pushing the boundaries. The project is going on strong thanks to the constant dnb scene evolving. And I believe we are in for a long and joyful way to go. So hold tight.

VS002 – GhoulCut & alg0rh1tm – Out now!

‘’Social Box’’  kicks things off with the pop-gun synth-bass, intricate percussion edits and looming pads, think of it as a journey through the underworld this track is bursting with emotion which keeps everything locked in nicely  A sublime, stripped back groove which pulsates with a technoid insistency

‘’Faraway Dreams’’ gets trippy with the drum space, haunting tribal soundscapes and live elements, The atmospheric susurration, the constant manipulation of that drum pattern, with a little distortion here or some glitching there. If you’re going to make a track with minimal elements those elements have to be perfect, and this is close to it.

Exclusive Interview with Din Is Noise

Image may contain: text

Din is Noise Records is a unique label based in Beirut, Lebanon which touches upon Dark 170, Experimental & Techno

”DIN (din is noise) is the start of a furtherance in the underground scene’s auditory evolution

We had the pleasure of catching up with Nadine Assaf the label founder & manager who launched DIN back in 2014 and has been growing to be go-to imprint for all your experimental needs.

Image may contain: 1 person, close-up

Hello Nadine, firstly thank you for taking the time to have a talk with us today. Could you tell us about your musical journey all the way up to discovering D&B and starting the Imprint?

Hello, thank YOU for the feature.
My musical journey! This might take an eternity to describe and I’d probably still won’t be able to put it into words. I had always been interested in music, I always felt that my ears are so keen that they can detect quality music from the very first beat. I don’t know if this has anything to do with both of my parents being musicians, but whatever, if it has, then I’m thankful :P

You’re gonna probably laugh at me now, but I tell you, when the DVD “Global” by PVD came out in 2003, I was 17 then, (i’m 32 today), it was love at first sight! it was what actually got me into wanting to delve more into the infinite world of electronic music.
To make a long story short, I had my generous share of electronic music in all its aspects and genres: house, minimal, trance, techno, drum n bass, IDM, alternative, and hip-hop…

But it wasn’t until the early 2000’s (2005, 2006, 2007 ) that I was introduced to drum n bass and hardcore music in general through a local movement under the name of “Kaotik System” that was the first to actually showcase, breakcore, drum and bass and hardcore music, back in 2003

Is there much of a bass music community in Beirut?

The bass scene in Beirut is currently not extinct but it’s not as large as what it used to be, however, the local crowd is always hungry for good music, but you can tell that the majority is geared towards more house and techno than drum n bass.
The case was a bit different back in early 2000, (2003) to be precise, it was when “Kaotik System” a local movement dedicated to promoting breakcore, hardcore, d&b music, started launching its series of secret parties, and they actually grew a fairly big crowd until they stopped in 2013.
Other promoters tried to take on the legacy, but things aren’t obviously the same anymore, especially that techno parties are way more accessible in Beirut nowadays than they used to be.

What would be the best way of describing Din Is Noise contribution and sound?

Din is noise was launched with many purposes;
– exposing the local scene to a new genre of electronic music, geared toward the experimental side
– showcasing different and left field music regardless of the genre focusing on its dark and experimental aspect, if you go back a bit with din’s back catalog, you’ll notice lots of experimental, dark minimal techno and some noise too. – offering the artists a free platform where they can expose their sound with no restrictions, and where they are offered free services as a sign of support from the label for their hard work
– Din focuses on the visual side by delivering solid visuals that contribute in bringing “sound” to life

So on the subject of music, I loved the Out of Fuel release it blew my socks off, could you give us a rundown of things coming up?

A joint compilation was actually released in collaboration with Onset Audio, right after Out of Fuel. Illuminate; a 13 track benefit compilation album, featuring some of the most exciting names in alternative bass and drum and bass music, where all proceeds go to families in Puerto Rico, it looks like a successful release so far and we’re quite happy about it.

2 forthcoming releases I can reveal now and I keep the rest on the down low.
A three track ep release with Tobe:n, a very promising artist, you’ll be surprised with what he has in store for you, including a remix from the boys who’ve been recently killing it “Out of Fuel”

And another release by “Lums”, really looking forward to this one, especially that it has both the jungle and autonomic aspects, very promising!

Who are your influences within this spectrum?

This is always a very hard question to answer for there are so many good artists out there, the deeper you dig, the higher the quality you find, I’m always influenced and inspired by so many artists on a daily basis but to be fair, I’m gonna say:
Squarepusher, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, Gridlock, Kid Drama, Dissident, Instra:mental, Photek, Dillinja, Source Direct, Venetian Snares, Dom & Roland, Om Unit, Plug aka Luke Vibert aka Carrier District aka Wagon Christ…, Fanu, Felix K, Fis, Rockwell, Synth Sense, Consequence, Shackleton, Bop.. to name a few.

The female movement within the scene is becoming very strong and it’s really refreshing to see, what are your views on it?

To be very honest with you, I have never personally felt of any less important than men neither in the scene nor in life, instead, I’ve always felt responsible for making a change and taking part in the music industry in any and every way possible. Knowing that the scene being a male-dominated industry is a fact and seeing how so many ladies are stepping up, as djs, producers, promoters and label owners, it actually gladdens me to see us thrive, and would love to see more of that, for the scene needs this diversity, it actually makes it well-balanced and consistent.

Could you give us a quick top 5 producers for you at the moment?

So many good producers out there…
Pessimist
DAAT
Overlook
Entire
Dyl
Alg0rh1tm
Not to mention that all the artist are doing a great job with every release.

Any advice to those wanting to get into forging a label of their own?

Know your sound, have a goal, let your passion lead you, make sure you contribute to making a change in the scene, most importantly, build a name that will always be remembered.

Last thing, what do you want to see more of in D&B?

Quite happy with the amount of quality music that is currently being released. So keep it coming! Would probably like to see more of the artists that have been quite absent from the scene.

Thanks for your time and good luck with the rest of the year…any last words?

Thank YOU for the feature again :) Good luck with Ronin Ordinance and full support!

Something Sinister Arising – Conspired Within Music ”Artist Collective LP”

Conspired Within Music based out of California has been a go to for fans of the deep atmospheric well spaced out forward thinking 170 music and they have something big lined up for 16th February 2018. The album being entitled the ”Artist Collective LP” hosts a smorgasbord of talent from the likes of Medika, Epilleptech, Out of Fuel & Akinsa. The artists serve the audience as the ”directors” if you will as they showcase this crafted almost horror movie like soundtrack, proving you that VA albums are not something that can be thrown together and not thought out.

Track highlights include fresh faced stateside artist Autosymbol,  ”Senseless” with its haunting militant pulse, heavy low end fluctuation and synths that corrupt the listeners well being. This ones a damager

Being extremely difficult to pick a favourite which is ever changing this release is definitely one for the sith lords of the drum & bass world. Another track i have to highlight is one of five bonus tracks featured on the physical copy of the LP, Epilleptech ”Shinro” is a awesome juxtaposition of techno, dub and profound harmonies

“Artist Collective L.P. features multiple artist’s on this special project which exhibits a variety of deep dnb styles and flavors, something which we take pride in”

Ryan Rossi AKA Conspired Within

Below you can find a great selection of music bound together by an emphasis on percussive precision and atmosphere. One for the heads that know…check it out and hit up the label Bandcamp store to pre-order now on CD or digital; the LP drops there Feb 9th with all other stores following on the 16th.
