Regal Records have been introducing top quality drum and bass with their first five releases – and now comes their long-awaited first EP.
‘The Crown Jewels’ features new blood and familiar faces. Exel, from Exeter, is one of the new recruits alongside long-time label friend Tomek N from London and a special collaboration from Pdex & Retrospekt, who hail from St Albans and Cardiff. Livewire, from Stroud, is back following his debut single ‘Don’t Let Go’.
Exel starts off the EP with ‘The Hitcher’, a no nonsense affair that gets straight to the point. The shrieking lead invades your ears, moves your body and shouts for more. It’s original, simple and hugely effective. Track number two is ‘Biography’ by Tomek N. The space-age effects and dreamy piano chords take you to a beautiful place, creating a crystal clear atmosphere for those shivers-down-the-spine moments.
Third in store is ‘Dizzy’ by Pdex & Retrospekt, the first Regal release to feature a video. This production goes back to the roots with a strong jungle influence and raw electro sound. It’s eccentric, slightly crazy and like nothing we’ve heard before. We finish the EP with ‘Hotline’ by Livewire. Tense strings keep you on edge as the sense of unpredictability slowly rises until; finally, the gritty low end comes sliding in to give you a rude awakening.
With these four tracks, Regal keeps the bar high, bass low and beats pristine. ‘The Crown Jewels’ launch the year in dazzling style; expect more young up and coming talent very soon. Regal Records have big things in store.

Hey there friends and haters! It’s Thursday again (weird huh? seems to be thursday every week now…) and it’s time to decide where to go for this weekend’s drum&bass raves. A lot of good nights (once again) so it’ll be hard to choose but some of us are hardcore and doing more than one per night. (I’m not saying I’m hardcore. I need my 8 hours sleep and my Taco Friday). I’ve made it easy for you guys to see where the awesome crew of drum+basics will be… in case you want to buy me a redbull/coffee (or any other drug of choice as long as it’ not alcohol) and Ben a pint (if you’re a girl I think it’s better to give Ben your number).
I wonder if it’s possible to overdo the ( ) signs. (No, I don’t know what the name is for them, I’m Swedish). In Sweden they’re called parantes. Nah, you can’t do too many of them!
Arguably one of the biggest tracks in the DnB scene during late 2010/early 2011 was Crystal Clear & Zen’s anthem of the dance ‘Heavy’. Smashed across the board by a spectrum of DJ’s it was a Ronseal track of the highest order, and is still heard being hammered out in the clubs today. All great tracks usually receive the VIP treatment and now Ganja Records has finally released the VIP of Heavy, which paired with Bullet on the flip will add further dancefloor devastation to the masses. Drum+Basics caught up with Crystal Clear & Zen to ask them about the release and they were kind enough to answer some of our questions!Read More
